Árón Taylor-Smith endured a frustrating weekend at Croft in the British Touring Car Championship, with the Irishman fighting hard throughout the event despite struggling to unlock the pace needed from his Corolla around the North Yorkshire circuit.
Having enjoyed strong results at Croft in previous seasons, Taylor-Smith faced an uphill battle from the outset. The weekend proved challenging from the opening practice sessions, and despite missing out in qualifying by only a couple of tenths, he showed his determination by making progress in the Qualifying Race to keep hopes high ahead of Sunday.
Sunday’s opening race saw the team make a bold strategic gamble as wet weather arrived. A last-minute decision on the formation lap saw Taylor-Smith pit for wet tyres and start the race from the pit lane, with the aim of maximising opportunities later in the day. The move almost paid off, with Taylor-Smith producing one of the drives of the race, charging through the field and finishing just outside the points.
Race Two brought more hard work for the Irishman as the team continued searching for improvements, with Taylor-Smith extracting everything possible from the package despite the challenging circumstances.
There was renewed optimism heading into Race Three. Further setup changes had been made overnight and Taylor-Smith was amongst a select group of drivers with a fresh set of soft tyres available, providing a genuine opportunity to move forward from 16th on the grid. Unfortunately, any hopes of ending the weekend on a positive note disappeared at the first corner. Caught up in contact triggered further up the field, Taylor-Smith was hit at Turn One and forced into retirement before he had the chance to demonstrate the potential of the revised setup.
Reflecting on the weekend, Taylor-Smith said:
“It’s been a really tough weekend and definitely not what we were hoping for. I fought as hard as I could in every session and every race, but ultimately the Corolla just wasn’t giving me what I needed to fight where I know we should be.”
“We made another set-up change for Race Three and genuinely felt that could have been our strongest showing of the weekend having saved a set of soft tyres to carve through the pack. Unfortunately, I was hit on the first lap and that ended our race through no fault of my own, which was obviously incredibly frustrating.”
Despite the disappointment, the focus now shifts firmly to the final two rounds of the season at Silverstone and Brands Hatch, two circuits that have historically suited Taylor-Smith well. The Irishman remains determined to end the 2026 campaign on a high.
