This past weekend, the R50 team had the pleasure of heading to Thruxton Circuit to cheer on our partner, Árón Taylor-Smith, as he tackled one of the fastest tracks on the BTCC calendar – and what a weekend it was!
From behind-the-scenes garage tours with Speedworks Motorsport to edge-of-your-seat racing, the action didn’t disappoint. But the real highlight? Árón delivered his best result of the season so far, charging through the field to finish 6th in the final race of the day.
A Rollercoaster Weekend
Thruxton threw everything at the teams – from dry practice sessions to torrential rain in qualifying – but Árón and the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK squad rose to the challenge.
Despite a technical issue with the front splitter in qualifying that saw Árón start race day from the very back of the grid, he showed why he’s a fan favourite. With trademark determination and serious skill, he gained a total of 26 places across all three races, showcasing the true grit that defines a champion.
Reflecting on the weekend, Árón said:
“Every once in a while, a weekend comes along that really reminds you what a rollercoaster ride competing in the British Touring Car Championship is, and this weekend at Thruxton definitely falls into that category!”
“For the first time, I feel like I’m driving ‘my car’, and it’s adapting to me, not the other way around… It feels as though we’ve turned a real corner, and we can kick on from here and really showcase the potential this car has.”
That sixth-place finish in Race 3 not only gave the team a huge morale boost, but also made Árón the leading Toyota driver across the weekend – a serious achievement in such a competitive field.
